How AI Overviews and AI Mode Are Changing Local Search for Contractors

Published by Riseian · AI Search for Contractors · 2026

AI Overviews (Google’s AI-generated answer blocks) and AI Mode (Google’s full AI search interface) are changing how homeowners find contractors — but not in the way most people assume. The Map Pack isn’t going away. What’s changing is that there’s now a second discovery channel, one that most contractor websites aren’t optimized for at all.

The actual current state (not hype)

A few important calibration points before getting into strategy:

  • AI Overviews currently appear on a much smaller share of true “near me” local queries than on informational queries. The local 3-pack is still the dominant format for searches like “kitchen remodeler near me.”
  • AI Overviews appear more frequently on research-stage queries — “how much does a kitchen remodel cost,” “what to ask a contractor before hiring,” “aging in place bathroom modifications.” These are earlier in the buyer journey.
  • According to Scorpion data from the ServiceTitan 2026 Industry Report, 22% of homeowners now use ChatGPT specifically to find contractors — a separate channel from Google’s AI Overviews.
  • Roughly 37% of consumers start service research in AI tools rather than traditional search, per 2026 behavioral data.

What this means in practice

The Map Pack isn’t dying — it’s still the most direct path to new contractor leads for decision-stage searches. But a growing share of research-stage searches — where homeowners form their mental shortlist of who to consider — now happen through AI-generated answers. Being visible at that stage, for those queries, is the new opportunity most contractor marketing is missing.

What AI Overviews and AI Mode use as source signals

According to Whitespark’s 2026 research, AI search visibility weights factors differently than traditional local pack ranking:

  • On-page content quality carries significantly more weight in AI visibility than in Map Pack ranking (~26% vs ~16%)
  • Citations and links also carry more weight in AI search
  • GBP signals, while still important, carry less relative weight in AI search than in traditional local search

The practical implication: a contractor with a perfect GBP but a weak website will increasingly miss AI search visibility — even as they maintain strong Map Pack placement. Both need to be built together.

What to actually do

1. Answer specific questions completely, at the top of the page

AI Overview extraction strongly favors content that answers a clear, specific question in the opening paragraph. A page about kitchen remodeling costs should open with an actual cost range and the factors that affect it — not a paragraph about your company’s history.

2. Build FAQPage schema markup

FAQPage structured data is one of the better-evidenced tactics for increasing AI Overview citation probability. When your FAQ content is machine-readable via schema, AI systems can more easily extract and cite specific answers.

3. Target research-stage questions specifically

The queries where AI Overviews appear most for contractors are research-stage questions: costs, timelines, what to look for in a contractor, comparison questions. These should be distinct content pieces — not buried in service page copy — and structured to answer the question directly.

4. Build genuine entity signals

AI systems use entity understanding to evaluate whether a business is a credible source on a topic. Consistent NAP across the web, a complete and accurate GBP, an About page with real team information, and clear topical focus (contractor SEO, not “digital marketing”) all contribute to entity strength.

5. Optimize for ChatGPT and other LLMs, not just Google

22% of homeowners using ChatGPT to find contractors is a meaningful number — and it’s growing. ChatGPT’s source material comes primarily from indexed web content and Bing’s search index. Being well-indexed on Bing Places and having strong organic content on your website covers both Google AI and ChatGPT visibility simultaneously.
