Google Business Profile Help for Contractors

GBP issues cost contractors real revenue — and most agencies don’t know how to fix them.

Google Business Profile suspension, wrong categories, and review policy violations are three of the most common reasons contractor GBPs underperform or disappear entirely. This hub covers all three in plain language.

Why GBP Matters More for Contractors

Google Business Profile signals account for roughly 32% of local pack ranking weight.

According to Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey — the most comprehensive annual study of local ranking signals — GBP signals are the single largest factor group determining whether a business appears in the local 3-pack for a given search. For contractors specifically, this means:

  • Category accuracy is the single highest-leverage, fastest-impact change most contractor GBPs can make. A wrong primary category limits visibility regardless of how many reviews you have.
  • Review recency matters more than total count. A contractor with 15 reviews in the last 90 days will typically outperform one with 200 reviews and no recent activity.
  • GBP suspension can eliminate a contractor’s online presence overnight. We’ve seen businesses lose their entire lead flow from a single suspension — often triggered by something they didn’t know was a violation.
  • Service attributes are widely under-used. Most contractor GBPs don’t fill out service attributes at all, leaving visibility for specific service searches completely unaddressed.
  • The connection to AI search is real. AI Overviews and AI Mode use GBP data as part of their entity understanding of a business. A complete, accurate GBP is part of the foundation for AI search visibility — not just traditional local search.

One Rule That Covers Everything

Your GBP should reflect your business exactly as it actually exists.

Every GBP guideline violation — the ones that get businesses suspended, lose reviews, or limit visibility — can be traced back to a mismatch between what’s in the GBP and what’s actually true about the business.

Address that isn’t real. Name that includes keywords not in your actual business name. Category that doesn’t match your primary service. Reviews from people who aren’t real customers. Every one of these is a violation because it represents the business inaccurately.

The contractors who maintain strong, stable GBP performance over time are the ones who treat their GBP as an accurate representation of their business — not an SEO tool to manipulate. The two things aren’t in conflict: an accurate, complete GBP is also the best-performing GBP.
