GBP Categories for Contractors

Wrong GBP category is the #1 reason contractor profiles underperform in local search — even with great reviews.

There are 40+ Google Business Profile category options specific to contractors. Most businesses are using the wrong primary category, limiting their visibility for every search that matters. This guide covers every major contractor trade.

Why Category Selection Is Critical

Your primary GBP category determines which searches you appear for. Full stop.

Google uses your primary GBP category as one of the strongest signals for determining which local search queries your business is relevant to. A bathroom remodeler listed as “General Contractor” is competing in the wrong pool — and likely underperforming for “bathroom remodeler near me” searches because their primary category doesn’t match the query intent.

This is one of the most common issues we find in contractor GBP audits — and it’s also the highest-leverage change you can make. Category correction often produces measurable improvement in local pack visibility within weeks, with no other changes required.

Primary category: One category that most accurately describes your primary business activity. This is the most important field in your entire GBP. Choose the most specific accurate option, not the broadest one that kind of fits.

Additional categories: Up to 9 more categories that describe secondary services. These expand your relevance for secondary searches without diluting your primary category signal.

Category Guide by Trade

The correct primary and secondary GBP categories for each major contractor trade.

Note: Google occasionally adds, removes, or renames categories. These were current as of mid-2026 — verify availability in your GBP when making changes.

Kitchen Remodeling

Primary category

Kitchen Remodeler — Use this if kitchen remodeling is your primary or sole service. Do not use “General Contractor” or “Home Improvement Store” as a fallback if “Kitchen Remodeler” exists and accurately describes your work.

Additional categories to consider

  • Bathroom Remodeler (if you also do bathrooms)
  • Cabinet Store (if you sell/install cabinetry)
  • Countertop Store (if you sell/install countertops)
  • Tile Contractor (if you do tile work)
  • Home Improvement Contractor
  • Remodeling Contractor (as a secondary only)

Do not use as primary: General Contractor, Construction Company, Handyman. These are too broad and compete with businesses that have different primary services.

Bathroom Remodeling

Primary category

Bathroom Remodeler — The most specific accurate option for bathroom remodeling specialists. Use this if bathroom remodeling is your primary service.

Additional categories to consider

  • Kitchen Remodeler (if you also do kitchens)
  • Tile Contractor (if you do significant tile work)
  • Plumber (if licensed and a meaningful portion of revenue)
  • Home Improvement Contractor
  • Remodeling Contractor

Accessibility-focused bathroom work: There is not currently a specific GBP category for aging-in-place or accessible bathroom remodeling. Use “Bathroom Remodeler” as primary and address accessibility work through your services list and website content.

General Contractors

Primary category

General Contractor — The correct primary for GCs whose work spans multiple trades and project types.

Additional categories to consider

  • Home Improvement Contractor
  • Remodeling Contractor
  • Construction Company (for larger commercial/residential mixed work)
  • Kitchen Remodeler (if this is a significant service)
  • Bathroom Remodeler (if this is a significant service)
  • Custom Home Builder (if applicable)

Do not add categories for services you don’t provide or that represent less than 10% of your revenue. Category stuffing is a documented GBP guideline violation risk.

Home Addition Contractors

Primary category

General Contractor is currently the most accurate primary category for home addition specialists — there is no specific “Home Addition Contractor” category in GBP as of 2026.

Additional categories

  • Home Improvement Contractor
  • Remodeling Contractor
  • Construction Company
  • Custom Home Builder (if you also build ADUs or full new construction)

Compensate for the lack of a specific category by making “home addition” a prominent service in your GBP service list, your service area description, and your primary website content.

Additional:

Painting Contractors

Primary:

Painting Contractor or Painter

Additional:

House Painter, Commercial Painter (if applicable), Drywall Contractor

Common Mistakes

The five category mistakes we see most often in contractor GBP audits.

Using “General Contractor” as a fallback

Kitchen remodelers, bathroom remodelers, and flooring contractors all sometimes default to “General Contractor” because it feels safe and broad. It isn’t — it puts you in the wrong search pool for your actual services and dilutes your relevance signal.

Category stuffing

Adding 9 additional categories for services you rarely or never perform. This can dilute your relevance signal for your primary category and is a documented GBP guideline violation risk if the categories don’t accurately describe your services.

Not using the service attribute section

Most contractor GBPs fill out categories but leave the service attributes section empty. Service attributes let you specify specific project types, materials, and accessibility features — additional relevance signals for more specific searches.

Not adding a services list

The GBP “Services” section (separate from categories) lets you list individual services with descriptions. This is another signal for specific service searches that most contractors leave blank.

Setting categories, then never reviewing them

Google occasionally retires categories or introduces more specific ones. A “Kitchen Remodeler” category that didn’t exist two years ago may now be available where you were previously using a broader alternative. Review your categories annually.
